Finance – Mainframe COBOL Migration

Use Unicage to securely and quickly process critical financial data.

Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG)

Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (SMFG) is a Japanese multinational banking and financial services institution that operates in retail, corporate, and investment banking segment worldwide. It is the second largest banking institution by total assets and market capitalization in Japan.

Problem

The Sumitomo Mitsui Card, one of the companies from the SMFG, needed to process credit and banking data for 30 million clients, 200,000 merchants, and 100 million transactions every month. This process took 15H of Cobol Code in Mainframe.

15 Hours Process

3645 Lines of Code

7 Jobs and 24 Processes

3 Months Development

Solution

Offload from Mainframe, transform Cobol code into Unicage Technology to process, transform and ingest again into Mainframe, simplifying and optimizing the process.

Key Results

Technical Benefits

Processing Speed

Processing time was reduced to 1/8 of the COBOL system (116.00/929.69=12,4%)

Unicage was measured running on 5 x86 servers (6-core CPU x 2, 48GB RAM)

If the number of servers is increased and processing distributed, even faster processing is possible.

Development Productivity

Using COBOL:
24 processes and 7 jobs required, so development took three months.

Using Unicage:
Coding – 5 days; Testing – 5 days; Performance Tweaking – 3 days Developed by a Unicage engineer with 5 years experience in 13 days.
